THE MAN BEHIND ALLY GROUP

The late Dato’ Abd Hamid Ibrahim was the man and prime mover of this ALLY GROUP of companies. An accountant by training, he was a living example of a self-made successful businessman.

Not content with being just a salaried worker, he struck out on his own to venture into the business of port handling and forwarding agency. From his humble beginnings way back in the early 1970s, he carefully nurtured his fledging business to grow into a respectable motor trading group today, now known as the ALLY Group of Companies.

He is among the pioneering group of Bumiputera entrepreneurs who had ventured into the importation of reconditioned motorcars. His company, ALLY AZRAN HOLDING SDN BHD was and still is well known as one of the major importers of reconditioned cars. So profound was his contribution to this motor sector that he was elected as its leader. He was the Chairman of the Malay Motor Importers and Trader Association or PEKEMA (Persatuan Pengimport dan Peniaga Kenderaan Melayu Malaysia) for 13 years. This is a testimony to his vast experience and knowledge of the local motor trade.

Far from being satisfied with his accomplishment, he further consolidated his involvement in the motor trade by obtaining the appointment as an authorised dealer for Perodua.

The group operations and stockyard is centrallised at Wisma Ally, Lot 26 Jalan AU3/1, Taman Keramat, 54200 Kuala Lumpur. This complex covering some 4.5 acres of ground, in operation since May 2003.

His vision and business acumen has seen him taking the driver’s seat in managing his business empire. It is no wonder then that the Malaysian Government gave him the “MALAYSIAN ENTERPRENEUR OF THE YEAR” award in 1990.

Now the late Dato’ Abd Hamid’s two sons, Ally Azran bin Dato’ Abd Hamid and Dato’ Ally Azwin bin Dato’ Abd Hamid is continuing the business and tradition.

This company had its beginning as PERWAKILAN ALLY AZRAN, a sole proprietorship, established way back in 1974. Business activity was centered around Port Klang. Acting as forwarding agent, shipping agent and lorry transport service operator. Among many companies and Government agencies with whom we have had and still have dealings are Tenaga Kimia Sdn. Bhd, Kay Marine Sdn Bhd, Mara Shipyard Engineering (Terengganu) Sdn Bhd, Europel Sdn Bhd, Torino Motor Industries Sdn Bhd and Ansell (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd.

To cope with the increased business volume and magnitude, a new private limited company was formed to handle the business. Known by its name ALLY AZRAN HOLDING SDN BHD, this new company was established in Kuala Lumpur on 29th September 1980 with an issued and paid up capital of RM 5,000,000-00.

The name change was also accompanied by a radical change in business direction – it had gone into the importing of reconditioned motorcars. Business had grown by leaps and bounds and today it has the government quota of 35 units of Approval Permit (“AP”) per month from Ministry of International Trade and Industry Malaysia (“MITI”). On top of this number, he also jointly managed the AP of other AP holders. This had enabled it to achieve annual vehicles sales turnover of around 500 units valued at about RM40 Milion.

Paid up capital are now RM 5,000,000-00 and more importantly, wholly owned by family members of En. Abdul Hamid Ibrahim. Its total staff strength stand at around 50 people.

It is our pride to mention that the company is now housed in its own building and situated in the prime commercial area of Free Trade Zone of AU3 Ulu Klang, Selangor.

The business philosophy practiced is to offer his customers a product that they can be comfortable with. Customers of our reconditioned cars can be assured of cars free of any problems – be it with regard to false AP or with regard to underpayment of import duties. This business philosophy has put the company in good stead and the ALLY AZRAN name has a good deal of goodwill already built up.

This is the third major motor company, after Ally Azran Holding Sdn. Bhd and Ally Azwin Sdn. Bhd, that En. Abdul Hamid established to expend his presence in the local motor trade. It is incorporated in 1993. Since its inception, the company had been operating as an authorised dealer for PERODUA, the second national car project company.

Like its sister company, this is a single outlet operation but proved to be very profitable. The company maintains a steady sales volume of RM 42,000,000-00 per annum.

This company was set up aimed at completing the motor activity of the Group by going into the areas of lubricants, racing accessories and other racing products.

In 1995, the company obtained appointment as the sole importer of PETRONAS LUBRICANT ITALY lubricant products, which is part of the Italian motor giant group, Magnetti Marelli.
